Doryopteris ludens

This fern from Peninsular Malaysia is a part of the Doryopteris and Hemionitis group. These ferns are noted for their shiny black stipes.  Some of these ferns are highly dimorphic.  (Observe the narrow contracted fertile frond in the center of the photo.)

These ferns are subtropical in their requirements.  While this species has not been in full cultivation, it is now being cultivated by many fern growers.  The Heart fern, Hemionitis arifolia, a similar looking fern, but much smaller, is now in tissue culture and can even be purchased in Walmart or Home Depot.
