Student Scholarship 2024

Tropical Fern and Exotic Plant Society announces the 6th Annual Scholarships for Students attending Florida International University, Miami-Dade, and the University of Miami.  Students (undergraduate and graduate) must be pursuing a career in horticulture, biology or botany.

Focus of gift:  To promote study, research, understanding and cultivation of native and exotic flora in subtropical Florida.

Amount:  Up to three (3) students may be gifted. There is a $500, $750  and $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship committee will determine the specific monetary award.

Requirements: An application and faculty letter of recommendation.  

Application and faculty letter of recommendation must be received by October 15th, 2024

Late applications will not be considered.

 

TFEPS board will make the final decision.

Scholarship recipient(s) will be notified and awarded by December 31st, 2024.  
A written acknowledgment if and when awarded is required.          

2023 Scholarship Recipients

  • Erika Guimaraes, an FIU student gaining her masters in Environmental Science.  Her field of interest is in establishing food forests across the United States in the appropriate hardiness zones.  The scholarship funds will enable her to travel to other field sites to expand her network and build her career in ethnobotanical research.

     Awarded $750.

  • Blaire Kleiman, a Ph.D student at Florida International University, Department of Earth and Environment in the Agroecology and Plant-Ecology labs, her focus is specializing on plant ecology in South Florida.  She is looking at how weeds affect insect abundance and diversity in mango production.  Funding will allow her to travel and share results with other tropical botanists.

    Awarded $750.

    *Blaire was awarded $500 in 2019, as an undergraduate student at FIU.

  • Andrea Marroquin, is a second-year Ph.D. student at FIU studying plant interactions under salinity stress. She is using her award toward purchasing the apparatus necessary to conduct salinity trials.
